Mythos: The Software Security Conundrum

This Tuesday, Anthropic released its latest LLM, Mythos, to 40+ companies. The selective release is because Mythos can identify and exploit software security vulnerabilities. For example, it has already found ways to get into Linux and take over the machine.

What do you do when you have created something that can unravel our society? Who do you release it to first? Now that it’s released, the risk of it getting into the wrong hands increases. This is right out of a sci-fi novel.

Anthropic has started with Amazon Web Services, Apple, Broadcom, Cisco, CrowdStrike, Google, JPMorganChase, the Linux Foundation, Microsoft, Nvidia, and Palo Alto Networks, along with 40 others. The hope is that they fix issues in their system fast before Mythos gets into a bad actor’s hands and they hack into a bank or missile system.

Anthropic started Project Glasswing, which has already found thousands of high-severity zero-day vulnerabilities in every major operating system and every major web browser, along with a range of other critical software.

No wonder Anthropic put limits on the Pentagon in using their AI.

In the long run, this is good news that our banking software will be secure, and new code can now be created and tested, knowing it’s clean.

Bottom line is make sure your software is up to date. I would expect several patches in the next few months.
